Nickel-alloyed pre-hardened mould steel imported and stocked for large, high-polish cavity blocks.
2738 is essentially a nickel-modified version of the 2311/P20 family. That nickel addition improves hardenability right through the cross-section, so a thick block hardens evenly instead of coming out soft in the core and hard at the skin — which is exactly the problem large mould makers run into with standard P20 once the block gets big.
It's the grade we recommend whenever a customer is cutting a large cavity block rather than a thin plate — the through-hardness holds up, the polish comes out consistent across the surface, and it still machines and EDMs the way toolmakers expect from a pre-hardened steel.
We import 2738 in large block sizes specifically for this reason, and cut it down to the exact block dimensions a mould shop needs.
